Residents learn more about Fire Safety

Residents, staff and volunteers from The Haven Wolverhampton have participated in a new scheme delivered by West Midlands Fire Service and funded by the Big Lottery Fund to raise awareness and increase knowledge on fire safety.

Representatives from The Haven Wolverhampton attended a week long training session at Merridale Street Fire Station which consisted of theory based classroom lessons and practical training. The weeks training taught students about fire and its causes, First Aid and CPR and road safety.

Every morning the group were given tasks to complete, ensuring they worked together as a team. The group were given authentic firefighter outfits to complete physical tasks which included; running, connecting and using a hose, setting up and footing a ladder, rescuing a casualty and bringing them down a ladder, using B.A. (Breathing Apparatus) tanks, rescuing a casualty from a smoke filled building and much more.

The week concluded with a ‘Fall Out Parade’ whereby a demonstration of all the skills the students had learned was performed in front of friends, family and staff from The Haven Wolverhampton. Those involved stated ‘it was an eye opening experience, this could save our lives one day’ and ‘I would advise anyone to go for the training’.
The Haven Wolverhampton would like to thank West Midlands Fire Service: Mick Herriman and Paul Challenor for arranging the course, and also our brilliant fire trainers; Simon, H, Nicky, Simon O and Paul who were very patient and helpful.
