The Big Plan

What is the Sustainable Community Strategy?

Local Strategic Partnerships oversee the development of a Sustainable Community Strategy for their area.

The Sustainable Community Strategy, a document shaping the Wolverhampton of the future, was first published in 2009. The Strategy provides a vision of what the City will look like in 2026 and sets out the key priorities over that time.  Download a copy of the Sustainable Community Strategy here

It was the subject of broad consultation and public involvement- more than 8,000 people gave their views about what should be done to make Wolverhampton a better place in which to live, work and play.

Wolverhampton people said they want to see a safe, clean, healthy and thriving city, where poverty and deprivation are features of the past and a caring city that invests in young people and provides opportunities for all. As a result of this extensive consultation 5 Resident Outcomes were identified:
  • We have more Job Opportunities
  • We like Where We Live
  • We feel Safer and More Involved
  • We'll Live Longer and Healthier Lives
  • We Have Access to The Skills and Knowledge We Need

What will Wolverhampton look like 2026?

We have set ourselves seven long-term and specific targets we want to meet by 2026:

  • Our population will have grown to at least 252,000
  • At least 76% of the working age population will have a job
  • We will have built at least an additional 13,000 homes
  • We will have reduced our carbon emissions to 4.1 tonnes per person
  • The majority of residents will feel safe all the time
  • People win Wolverhampton will live as long as the national life expectancy of age 82 for men and 85 for women
  • 40% of the population will be qualified to degree level
The Local Area Agreement

The Local Area Agreement (LAA) acts as the delivery plan for the first 3 years of the Sustainable Community Strategy, it contains a set of 32 targets, which we have agreed with Central Government.  The SCS and LAA were based on the 'Wolverhampton Story'.  We have assessed our progress towards achieving our targets in the 'Wolverhampton Story - One Year On'.
